Stanford Environmental and Climate History Workshop
The Stanford Environmental and Climate History Workshop aims to enrich the intellectual community for graduate students working in environmental history, broadly defined. There is a growing number of graduate students interested in environmental history, but there are limited opportunities for them to come together and explore new research on the topic. We bring together graduate students—both working in history and other related fields—and host workshops, professionalization events, and reading groups to allow students to explore important approaches, methods, and new work within the field of environmental history.
Formed in 2021 by Paul Nauert and Vannessa Velez, SECH has hosted in-progress workshops and talks with scholars including Megan Black, Andreas Malm, and Dagomar Degroot. SECH also provides space for Stanford graduate students to workshop in-progress research and upcoming conference papers. We have collaborated and co-hosted workshops with the Program on History and Philosophy of Science, the Stanford Doerr School of Sustainability, the US History Workshop, and the Eurasian Empires Workshop, among others.
