The Environmental History Working Group aims to contribute to the environmental humanities at Stanford, and beyond, through programming events, workshopping in-progress scholarship, building peer networks, and sharing resources. Our team acts out of a shared sense of responsibility to pursue research that addresses the pressing questions of our time. Formed in 2024, and building off a longer tradition of environmental history on campus, we work collectively to build up and institutionalize environmental history within the History department and Stanford more broadly, and collaborate with a variety of existing workshops, centers, and units to achieve these goals. In our moment of climate crisis and global environmental catastrophes, we hope to glean from history parables and lessons that will help us navigate these turbulent times.
