Imperial Environments Workshop
Imperial Environments is an initiative we began in the 2024-2025 academic year in order to examine the power relations inherent in our present ecological crisis. Through a variety of workshops and other programming, we bring together scholars working on disparate regions to develop frameworks for understanding connection and collaboration between empires as well as similarities and differences between different modes of imperial environmental governance.
Through funding from Stanford Global Studies, the Stanford History Department, and the Vice Provost for Graduate Education, we have explored these concerns through several workshops of in-progress works by established and rising scholars in environmental history. We also developed a Colloquy for Stanford Arcade, where we collect some of the most important bibliographic material that has shaped our thinking.
